The Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve is located just south of Cape Town, in the suburb of Claremont. To get there, take the N2 freeway south from Cape Town. Take the exit for Mowbray, and then follow Main Road east towards Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. After about 5km, you will see signs for the Reserve. Turn off here and follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area.
Cradle of the Coastal Desert: The Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve
Situated within the Cape Floral Kingdom, the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve is home to a rich variety of fynbos plants. The 658-hectare reserve was established in 2003 to protect the endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld ecosystem.
The Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve is situated on the west coast of South Africa, approximately 100km north of Cape Town. The reserve protects a significant portion of the Swartland Shale Renosterveld ecosystem, which is found nowhere else in the world. This ecosystem is under threat from agriculture, urbanisation and mining.
The Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve is an important area for biodiversity conservation. The reserve is home to a number of rare and threatened plant species, including the Swartland Shale Renosterveld species Drimia uniflora and Conophytum pillansii. These plants are found nowhere else in the world. It is also home to a number of rare and threatened bird species, including the Critically Endangered South African Rand Waterbird.
Preservation, Protection, and Education of this Site
The City of Cape Town is working to protect and preserve these important sites through a number of initiatives. The Atlantis Dunes are part of the city’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, which aims to protect and restore natural habitats throughout the city. Getting There and Transporting Your Own Gear

The first step is to find a way to get to the Dunes. The best option is to take a 4×4 vehicle. There are a few companies that offer tours to the dunes, but it is also possible to self-drive. Be aware that the terrain is very difficult and only experienced drivers should attempt it.
The best way to get to the Atlantis Dunes and the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve is by car. There is a parking lot at the entrance to the reserve. If you are coming from Cape Town, take the N1 highway north towards Paarl. Take the exit for R304 and turn left onto this road. After about 3 kilometers, you will see a sign for the nature reserve on your right. Turn into the gravel parking lot here.
If you are not renting a car, there are a few options for public transportation. You can take a MyCiTi bus from Central Station in Cape Town to Paarl and then transfer to a bus going to Melkbosstrand. From Melkbosstrand, you can take a taxi or hitchhike the rest of the way to the nature reserve. Another option is to take a train from Cape Town’s Central Station to Bellville and then transfer to a bus going towards Melkbosstrand. Hitchhiking or taking a taxi from Melkbosstrand is again your best bet for getting all the way to the Atlantis Dunes and Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve.
Be Safe And Respectful To The Environment
Once you’re at the Dunes, there are a few different trails you can take. The most popular is the one that leads to the top of the dunes. From here, you’ll have an incredible view of the surrounding area. Be careful, though, as the sand can be very slippery. If you’re interested in seeing some of the area’s wildlife, the best place to go is the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve.
